An objective of the present invention is to provide a magnetic field generator for a steel sheet defect detection device which does not interfere with a surface of a steel sheet and is easy to maintain and repair. To achieve the objective, the magnetic field generator for a steel sheet defect detection device according to the present invention comprises: a sensor module having unit sensors arranged in a line along a transverse direction to detect a defect on a steel sheet being transported; a signal processing device to process an output sensed by the sensor module; a magnetic body arranged along a transverse direction of the steel sheet to cover the entire width of the steel sheet; a plurality of magnetic force transfer units disposed on each end of the magnetic body to supply a magnetic force in a direction of a side of the steel sheet; a transport unit attached to an end of each of the magnetic force transfer units to adjust the distance between an end of the side of the steel sheet and the other end of each magnetic force transfer unit. The transport unit transports each magnetic force transfer unit along the transverse direction of the steel sheet to maintain a fixed distance between the end of the side of the steel sheet and the other end of the magnetic force transfer unit.
