[Class 46] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] A device to serve as a sump for use in circulating cooling fluid and separating contained swarf in lathes, milling, grinding, and like machines is built up from sheet metal, as by welding, and contains two or more superposed compartments so arranged that liquid passes from the top compartment to that at the bottom. In addition each compartment may be subdivided horizontally. The sump is closed by a flanged lid 17 with a front portion 17b hinged at 33 that normally maintains a shoot 35, pivoted at 36, in the position shown in Fig. 3. The lid has a collector bin 18 discharging at 19 into the top compartment D near the partition 11 that provides a dry space in which the motor 10, for the pump 9 is located. The bottom of the top series of compartments A slopes upwardly at 6a towards the front, and the partition 23 is notched at this end to form a weir 23a over which the liquid flows into the compartment E the partition 24 having a weir notch 24a for delivery to the compartment F which delivers by a hole to a fall conduit 22 communicating with a similar set of compartments B through which the liquid flows in reverse order finally to reach the pump 10. Baffles are pro- 'vided at the weirs to act as scum traps, those 27 at the front being removable to facilitate cleaning out swarf. This is effected without stopping the operation of the device by opening the hinged flap 17b and letting the shoot sink forward onto the step 37. At the same time a hinged flap 30 held in place by spring .catch 32 is released to cover the openings to the lower compartments. Sludge can then be loosened by a poker 38 and raked up by a scraper 41 to fall 'via the shoot into a tank 8 supported on wheels 43 at one end and on a strip 44 at the other. After the compartments A have been cleaned the flap 30 is replaced and the compartments B are treated. The tank 8 can be removed through an opening 3 when emptying is necessary. The poker and scraper are kept in two of the compartments when not in use.</p> |
