Method of growing synthetic quartz

Single crystals of quartz are grown on at least two seed crystals which are elongated in the direction of their Y crystal axes maintained in end-to-end abutment with their Y-axes in alignment and their respective major longitudinal faces in common planes. A pair of Y-bar seed crystals 10 and 12 (Fig. 1) of the same "handedness" are placed with their ends abutting at 22, and are held in place by quartz crystal plates 24 and 26 secured by silver wire 28. The seed bars are placed in a growing solution in an autoclave and grown in a known manner until the two seeds form an integral piece of quartz, as shown in Fig. 2. This is trimmed to form an extra-length seed crystal, as shown in Fig. 3, which is grown in a known manner to form a crystal as shown in Fig. 4. The final crystal may be cut into several extra-length seeds on which extra-length crystals may be grown. Specifications 761,643, 807,304 and 827,501 are referred to.
