The present invention relates to a mobile terminal and a control method thereof capable of sensing a tap, which is a tapping on a display unit in a state of the display unit inactivated, comprising: a terminal body; a display unit arranged in a front surface of the body; a sensing unit which senses a tap on the body in a state of the display unit inactivated; and a control unit which releases a locking state which restricts a reception of a control command from a user, if a pattern of the sensed tap corresponds to a previously set pattern, converts the display unit from an inactivated state to an activated state, and displays previously set screen information on the display unit.
