The invention relates to an exhaust scrubber (1') for scrubbing the exhaust gases of combustion engines, especially ship engines, of impurities, the exhaust scrubber having a bed-like structure (3'), through which unscrubbed exhaust gases are fed, and feeding devices (5') for feeding washing water to the bed-like structure, whereby the exhaust gases are scrubbed as they pass through the bed-like structure. To ensure the desired operation of a combustion engine even in a situation where impurities have accumulated in the bed-like structure (3') to the extent that the flow of exhaust gases through the bed-like structure is prevented, the exhaust scrubber (1') has at least one by-pass path (6') for guiding exhaust gases containing impurities past the bed-like structure (3') and further out of the exhaust scrubber, the by-pass path being surrounded by a bed-like structure (3') and having blocking devices (10') for setting the by-pass path from its open position to its blocking position to prevent the flow of exhaust gases containing impurities through the by-pass path, and, vice versa, from the blocking position to the open position to allow the exhaust gases containing impurities to flow through the by-pass path.
