A variator is disclosed having coaxially mounted rotatable input (12) and output races defining a toroidal cavity with a rolling element (20, 22) having a rolling contact with one race and a second rolling contact, the rolling element being mounted on a carriage assembly for rotation about a rolling axis and the rolling element being mounted for pivotal movement about a pitch axis (A, B-Fig.1), a control member (42) to actuate the rolling element (20, 22) to cause pivotal movement and thereby change the pitch angle, and thereby cause the carriage assembly to pivot about a tilt axis to effect a change in variator ratio and a mechanical end-load system (42, 44-Fig.7) which applies an axial end-load force to the rolling elements (20, 22) directly related to torque transmitted through the variator. The variator is useful in a transmission which operatively connects a prime mover to a supercharger drive input. |
