An electrochemical cell comprising a negative electrode, a positive electrode material and a separator disposed between the negative electrode and the positive electrode material, wherein the positive electrode material comprises: (i) a composite comprising an iron and fluoride containing compound, wherein the iron and fluoride containing compound is an iron oxyfluoride nanocrystallite; and (ii) a conductive matrix comprising an ionic conductive matrix, an electronic conductive matrix or a combination thereof.
