The invention relates to an optical element (10) which has a light guide panel (1) with a first main surface (11), a second main surface (12) opposite the first main surface (11), and lateral surfaces (13) which connect the main surfaces (11, 12). The light guide panel (1) has a matrix material (14) which is transparent to ultraviolet light and in which scattering centers (15) are embedded. Furthermore, at least one light-emitting semiconductor component (2) is provided, which couples ultraviolet light into the light guide panel (1) via a lateral surface (13) during operation, and a first filter layer (31) is provided on the main surface (11) and a second filter layer (32) is provided on the second main surface (12), said filter layers not being permeable to ultraviolet light and being at least partly transparent to visible light. A first photochromic layer (41), which has a variable transparency for visible light by means of ultraviolet light, is provided at least on the first main surface (11) between the light guide panel (1) and the first filter layer (31).
