SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DELIVERING ENERGY TO TISSUE A system (10) for ablating tissue comprises an elongate shaft having a proximal portion, a distal portion and a longitudinal axis, and an ultrasound transducer (12) coupled to the distal portion of the elongate shaft, wherein the ultrasound transducer is adapted to deliver a beam (20) of ultrasound energy and the beam of energy ablates target tissue without contact between the ultrasound transducer (12) and the target tissue. The beam (20) of ultrasound energy is emitted in a direction relatively transverse to the longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft and forms a continuous lesion in the target tissue.
