A novel biologically active water treatment system for removing contaminant from industrial effluent and method thereof is provided. A novel upflow bioreactor system having an expanded bed configuration and method for creating an expanded bed for release of gas without release of substantial precipitate is also provided. A novel downflow bioreactor system having an automated degas and backwash system is also provided.

1. A multi-stage water treatment system comprising:
an upflow bioreactor having a bioreactor bed comprised of an insoluble growth media suitable for growing a bacteria colony thereon, wherein the upflow bioreactor is capable of receiving water from a water source and releasing water during production mode at an effluent port; a downflow bioreactor having a bioreactor bed comprised of an insoluble growth media suitable for growing a bacteria colony thereon, wherein the downflow bioreactor is configured for receiving effluent during production mode from the upflow bioreactor and releasing water at an effluent port of the downflow bioreactor; and wherein the effluent port of the upflow bioreactor is configured for releasing water during production mode from the upflow bioreactor at an area above the insoluble growth media of the upflow bioreactor and into the downflow bioreactor at an area above the insoluble growth media of the downflow bioreactor.
