Apparatus for turning the peripheral surface of non-circular work comprises a tool guided for displacement radially relative to the work, a rotary template, a feeler bearing against the template and acting directly on the tool, the template and feeler being carried on a slide which is movable in a direction inclined to the direction of displacement of the tool. The work 3, Fig. 1, which may be a batch of piston rings, is carried in a slide 2 moved longitudinally by a screw 4 to effect the turning by a tool 19. The work and template 11 are rotated synchronously by gearing 6-8, 9, 10 and 12. The template 11 and the lever 17 transmitting motion therefrom are carried on an adjustable slide 13 which is movable in a direction at an angle to the line of movement of the tool 19. One end of the lever 17 carries a roller bearing on the template and the other end bears directly on the end of the tool. The latter may be supported in its rest by two leaf-springs 25, Fig. 4, where only slight copying movements are required. |
