A water-soluble germicidal detergent composition comprises (a) one or more anionic surface active agents of the general formula R.NH.CH2CH2.COOX or R.N.(CH2CH2COOX)2/t where R is an alkyl radical of 8-22 carbon atoms which is suitably derived from lauric acid or from the fatty acids of coconut oil, and X is a cation such as sodium, potassium or triethanol-ammonium, and (b) one or more germicidal quaternary ammonium compounds, suitably having a cation of the general formula R1R11R111R1111N+, wherein R1 and R11 are alkyl groups of 1-4 carbon atoms, R111 is an aliphatic group of 8-22 carbon atoms, R1111 is an aliphatic group of 8-22 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group such as benzyl, and the anion is chloride, bromide, or sulphate; the aliphatic groups R111 and R1111 are preferably derived from stearic, lauric, tallow or coconut fatty acids. The weight ratio of (a) to (b) is preferably 1 : 1 to 15 : 1, and the compositions may include non-ionic wetting agents such as alkylaryl polyglycol ethers, glycol, alcohols containing 1-4 carbon atoms and alkali metal phosphates or pyrophosphates.ALSO:A water-soluble germicidal detergent composition comprises (a) one or more anionic surface active agents of general formula R.NH.CH2CH2.COOX or R.N.(CH2CH2 COOX)2, where R is an alkyl radical of 8-22 carbon atoms which is suitably derived from lauric acid or from the fatty acids of coconut oil and X is a cation such as sodium, potassium or triethanol-ammonium; and (b) one or more germicidal quaternary ammonium compounds, suitably having a cation of general formula R1R11R111R1111N +, wherein R1 and R11 are alkyl groups of 1-4 carbon atoms, R111 is an aliphatic group of 8-22 carbon atoms, R1111 is an aliphatic group of 8-22 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group such as benzyl, and the anion is chloride, bromide, or sulphate; the aliphatic groups R111 and R1111 are preferably derived from stearic, lauric, tallow or coconut fatty acids. The weight ratio of (a) to (b) is preferably 1 : 1 to 15 : 1, and the compositions may include non-ionic wetting agents such as alkylaryl polyglycol ethers, glycol, alcohols containing 1-4 carbon atoms, and alkali metal phosphates or pyrophosphates.
