An image pickup apparatus includes an image pickup unit that picks up an object to generate moving image data. A detection unit detects one of a shooting direction of the image pickup unit and an attitude of the image pickup apparatus. A storage unit temporarily stores moving image data generated by the image pickup unit. An instruction unit instructs operation to photograph a still image. A recording unit reads out the moving image data traced back by a predetermined time period from a time point when still image photographing is instructed by the instruction unit, from the storage unit, and records the read-out moving image data in a recording medium. The recording unit records, relatedly with the moving image data, information concerning the detected one of the shooting direction and the attitude of the image pickup apparatus.

an image pickup unit that picks up an object to generate moving image data; a detection unit that detects one of a shooting direction of the image pickup unit and an attitude of the image pickup apparatus; a storage unit that temporarily stores moving image data generated by the image pickup unit; an instruction unit that instructs operation to photograph a still image; and a recording unit that reads out the moving image data traced back by a predetermined time period from a time point when still image photographing is instructed by the instruction unit, from the storage unit, and records the read-out moving image data in a recording medium, wherein the recording unit records, relatedly with the moving image data, information concerning the detected one of the shooting direction and the attitude of the image pickup apparatus.
