A focal point detection device is provided with: a focal point detection sensor for outputting a pair of focal point detection signal sequences; a difference calculation unit for obtaining multiple differences by sequentially calculating the differences between the corresponding focal point detection signals in the pair of focal point detection signal sequences; a division unit for dividing the pair of focal point detection signal sequences into at least two pairs of partial signal sequences on the basis of the multiple differences; a focal point detecting parameter computation unit for computing a first focal point detecting parameter in accordance with the phase difference amount of a first pair of the partial signal sequences and a second focal point detecting parameter in accordance with the phase difference amount of a second pair of the partial signal sequences; and a focal point adjusting parameter determination unit for determining the first focal point detecting parameter or the second focal point detecting parameter as the focal point adjusting parameter.
