An automatic, single - acting slack adjuster for brakes, comprises parts 4, 8 for attachment to brake rigging and a part 6, 7, 19 having a small axial play relative to part 4 and being screwthreaded on to part 8, and a oneway driving device for rotating part 6, 7, 19 comprising a clutch between part 6, 7, 19 and a driven member 15 rotatably mounted on part 6, 7, 19, the clutch being engaged by a compressed spring 14 disposed between shoulders 11, 13 on parts 4 and 6, 7, 19 respectively, wherein a sleeve 20 axially displaceable relative to part 4 and 6, 7, 19 has a shoulder 21 between shoulder 11 and spring 14 and normally transmits pressure of spring 14 to the clutch. On braking, force is transmitted from cylinder 3 via levers 1, 2 to part 4 and via shoulders 11, 21, spring 14, shoulder 13, part 6, 7, 19 to part 8. The spring 14 eventually yields and the force is then transmitted directly through shoulders 12, 13, the clutch which is formed by members 16, 19, 20, then being disengaged. If brake clearance is too large, a roller 25 in guide 26 rotates arm 24 which rotates member 15 before spring 14 has yielded, this rotation being transmitted via a pawl and ratchet (Fig. 3, not shown), to ring 16 and via the clutch to part 6, 7, 19. If the clearance is normal, the rotation of member 15 occurs after spring 14 has yielded and the clutch disengaged. An anti-friction bearing may be disposed between sleeve 20 and ring 16 (Fig. 4, not shown); and the ring 16 may be rotated via a pawl attached to a piston which is moved by compressed air after the brake cylinder piston has moved a predetermined distance. |
