<p>At least one processing parameter describing how data of a real-time communication event is to be processed for transmission to a receiver jitter buffer 114 is determined. The data is then processed in accordance with the parameter(s) and transmitted to the jitter buffer. Control information based on the processing parameter(s) is also transmitted to the receiver, the receiver using the information to control a state of the jitter buffer, e.g. the size or delay of the jitter buffer. The processing parameter(s) may include the encoding bit rate, forward error correction (FEC) depth, packetization and interleaving. In an alternative embodiment, the data processing parameters used by the transmitter are controlled on the basis of the state of the jitter buffer (figure 2). Alternatively, the processing parameters used by the transmitter and state of the jitter buffer are optimized jointly and adaptively (figure 9).</p> |
