The system has a storage and retrieval unit (3) and belt conveyor (5) that are controlled so that goods of first and subsequent commissions are sent to dispensing locations (4) and goods of first commission lie downstream of goods of subsequent commission on conveyor. Locking unit (10) is controlled such that goods are prevented from being further sent until goods of first commission have accumulated behind a barrier. Locking unit is released so that first commission is further transported and barrier is again arranged above belt so that goods of subsequent commission are accumulated. An independent claim is included for a method of operating automated storing and commissioning system for small cargos.
