Alkyl iodides are prepared by reducing elemental iodine in an aqueous slurry containing HSO3- ions to hydriodic acid, and reacting the latter with an equivalent molar amount of a dialkyl sulphate in which the alkyl contains 1-5 carbon atoms, at pH 1-6 and 45-100 DEG C. The bisulphite ions may be furnished by means of sodium bisulphite or sulphite, or by passing gaseous SO2 into the slurry of iodine. |
