Dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroterephthalate is prepared by chlorinating terephthalyl dichloride and reacting the product with methanol at reflux.ALSO:A herbicidal composition comprises a dimethyl - 2,3,5,6 - tetrahaloterephthalate (particularly dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroterephthalate) and either a liquid carrier and a surface-active agent or a solid carrier with or without a surface-active agent. Specified carriers include clays, diatomaceous earth, talc, spent catalyst, finely-divided alumina-silica gel, water, kerosene, benzene, toluene, chlorinated benzene, acetone, cyclohexanone, carbon disulphide and alcohols. Surface-active agents specified include alkylaryl polyether alcohols, cationic quaternary ammonium salts and alkyl aryl sulphonates. |
