The cleaner roller 2 comprising bristles disposed radially around a shaft 3 is coaxial with the driving wheel 9 and connected thereto by means of a step-up gearing 12, 13. A casing 1 provided with a bottom suction aperture and with a top air discharge aperture houses the roller 2, a collecting receptacle 31 covering the top aperture and having a window in front of which is a screen of larger area thus forming a labyrinth path for the escaping air and separating from it the material picked up by the roller 2. The material transported by the air strikes the screen and falls to the bottom of the receptacle 31. The outer part of the top edge of the casing 1 is shaped over the whole of its length in the form of a hinge hook for holding in place the receptacle 31. In place of the receptacle 31 a guard may be used when cleaning is effected with the aid of wet sawdust, the sawdust swept up from the floor being caused by the guard to fall back in front of the sweeper so that the latter automatically carries out the work of rubbing the sawdust over the floor which is usually done by hand. The top edge of the casing 1 is also turned over towards the inside as indicated at 30 and this flange serves to hinder the reverse rotation of the roller 2 and, through the effect of their elasticity, to increase the speed at which the bristles free themselves from contact with the edge. The sweeper rests on the ground on four wheels, the aforesaid wheel 9, a corresponding wheel on the opposite side of the machine which is idle, and two smaller wheels 23 which cause the casing 1 to assume the desired angular position in relation to ,the floor so that a strip of felt 29 housed in a seat at the rear of the casing will brush the floor and prevent sweepings from escaping to the rear. In another embodiment in which a freewheel mechanism is incorporated in the gearing, the sweeper rests on the floor on only two wheels, of which one is the driving wheel, and on a rear strip of felt and the handle is articulated to the sweeper at a point offset in relation to the axis of the roller towards the felt in order to create a couple and hence apply pressure to the felt. |
