<p>An active electronically scanned array (AESA) antenna 10 comprises a plurality of antenna elements 12 arranged on the circumference of platters or disks 14. A first plurality of platters or disks 14 forms a generally cylindrical array 18 and a second plurality of platters or disks 14 forms a generally conical or tapered array 20. A plurality of amplitude/phase modules is provided and each module is coupled to at least two antenna elements. The invention may comprise selecting a first subset of the antenna elements, calculating a sum and delta azimuth beam for each amplitude/phase module which is coupled to an antenna element in the subset, combining each sum and delta azimuth beam from every amplitude/phase module on each platter into a single sum and delta azimuth beam for that platter, and forming an elevation beam. Using an element selection circuitry, the invention may reduce the total number of amplitude/phase modules required.</p> |
