A system for providing handoff for a mobile devices comprising a mobile phone programmed to automatically handover between differing data bearers and to optimally detect those bearers in a roaming environment keeping power consumption to a minimum. Repeating means for these mobile devices to extend the range of coverage and the protocol for that coverage.

1. A telecommunications system that connects a mobile unit to an intended recipient for a telephone call, comprising:
a mobile telecommunications unit; said mobile telecommunications unit having a transmitter unit to simultaneously transmit WLAN and WWAN communications using a WLAN and a WWAN; a WLAN access point that receives a communication of the WLAN communications from said mobile unit to be transmitted to said intended recipient through a communication path on a communication network; a server connected to the communication network; said server receiving said WLAN and WWAN communications simultaneously; wherein said mobile telecommunications unit obtains authentication for accessing said WLAN access point through said WWAN communication when said WLAN access point is not identified as an authorized access point by said mobile unit; wherein said communication is encoded into IP before being transmitted to said communication network when said communication path comprises a WLAN; wherein the WLAN is arranged to authenticate the mobile telecommunications unit so that the telephone call to the intended recipient is continuous when the communication path switches between utilizing the WLAN communication and utilizing the WWAN communication; wherein said mobile unit further comprises an audio processing layer that is independent of, and interacts with, multiple radio communication paths to maintain consistent audio quality; and such system is capable of handoff of said communications between WLAN and a WWAN.
