A system for transmitting and receiving magnetic signals within a wireless local access network (WLAN), comprising: a chassis configured to receive and provide power to a plurality of electronic modules; a transmitter in the chassis and having a signal source, a modulator coupled to the source, a power amplifier coupled to the modulator and a magnetic antenna inductively coupled to the power amplifier for transmission of magnetic signals; a receiver coupled to a magnetic antenna for receiving magnetic signals, a wireless communication device operatively connected to the transmitter and the receiver for connecting to the WLAN; and a plurality of electronic modules, each comprising a portable interdependent satellite magnetic transceiver configured to communicate with the wireless communication device via the WLAN; wherein the WLAN comprises a point-to-multipoint network, and the wireless communication device is configured to connect to the WLAN via a wireless router, wherein the plurality of portable interdependent satellite magnetic transceivers, the wireless communication device, the transmitter and the receiver are enclosed within the chassis, and wherein communication between the wireless communication device and the plurality of portable interdependent satellite magnetic transceivers is automatically established upon the mounting of the corresponding electronic module in the chassis and the application of power to the mounted electronic module.
