[Also in Groups XV and XVII] Relates to mechanism for applying a tearstrip A, Fig. 3, to a wrapper E so as to extend beyond one edge thereof. Wrapping web E, Fig. 1, is fed between guide-plates 3, 4 and tearstrip stock A is fed below a longitudinal slot 3<SP>1</SP> in the plate 3. A knife element 8 with cutting- edges 14, 15 spaced longitudinally by an amount corresponding to the length of tear-strip required to extend beyond the edge of the wrapper, is reciprocable transversely to the slot 3<SP>1</SP> and in its operative position is located between the web E and tear-strip A. The cutting-edge 15 co-operates with a knife 9 to make an incision in the web E corresponding to the width of the tear-strip and at the line of eventual separation of the web, while the cutting-edge 14 co-operates with a knife 10 to sever the tear-strip. The knife 10 is carried in a recess in a heated presserbar 13 which reciprocates vertically to engage in the slot 3<SP>1</SP> of the guide-plate 3 and cement the separated parts of the tear-strip to the wrapping web immediately following the cutting- operation. The recess in the bar 13 prevents the cementation of the web and the portion of the tear-strip which will eventually extend beyond the edge of the separated wrapper. A further length of wrapping web and tear-strip is then drawn forwards and the operation repeated, the web on each side of the tear-strip then being severed at the line where the incision was made to form the individual wrappers with tear-strip applied as shown in Fig. 3. |
