Organomagnesium and organolithium compounds prepared under an atmosphere of a noble gas, e.g. helium, argon, may be used as initiators in preparing crystalline acrylic polymers, e.g. polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid and polymers and copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid esters (see Ex. 1). Specification 884,733 is referred to.ALSO:Organolithium and organomagnesium compounds are prepared by the usual conventional methods but under an atmosphere of a noble gas, e.g. helium or argon. The products of the Grignard reaction may be worked up as usual. The lithium derivatives may be used to prepare other compounds, e.g. fluorenyl lithium from butyllithium and fluorene (Ex 7). Diphenyl magnesium may be prepared from diphenyl mercury and magnesium in an atmosphere of helium (Ex 8). The preparation of phenyl magnesium chloride under these conditions is disclaimed. |
