The invention relates to controlling the optical transmission devices in the equipment of a client of a fibre-to-the-home-type passive optical access network which uses multiple optical wavelengths for transmission, with modulation of digital data or radio frequencies. The OLT continually monitors the spectrum and number of ONUs in the PON. The ONUs are based on a low-cost VCSEL or DFB laser which has a non-predetermined wavelength and includes devices for adjusting the wavelength and bandwidth. The technique consists of a centralised intelligent algorithm for controlling the wavelength and subcarrier in the OLT, which controls and orders the ONU mechanisms in order to prevent possible interferences while keeping the total cost of the network low.
