<p>The method involves locally detecting an event i.e. leak, in a pipe (10) by swimming sensors or detectors (32) placed along the pipe at regular intervals. A signal coded according to the detected event is generated, where the signal is coded according to one of parameters including presence of a leak, size of the leak, presence of contaminant, malfunction of the detector and an identifier of the detector, and the signal is variable along time and takes values corresponding to the parameters. A frequency signature of the signal is located in images generated by a synthetic aperture radar (22).
