A method of treating a hide or a skin includes treating at least one side of the hide or skin with an effective amount of an enzyme preparation, placing the hide or skin between two electrodes and applying a predetermined potential difference across the electrodes to a pass a direct current through the hide or skin. Another method of treating a stack of hides or skins is described, in which each skin is treated with a source of enzyme preparation on the flesh side; the skins are stacked in a parallel fashion such that the flesh and grain sides of one skin are in contact, respectively, with the grain side of the one preceding it and the flesh side of the other following it; and a pair of conducting surfaces are placed at the two ends of the stack to pass a direct current through the stack.
