The invention relates to a process for improving the efficiency of an internal combustion engine and to a piston engine for carrying out the process. According to the invention, the process consists in using two separate combustion chambers which are thermally insulated, with a view to using, during the expansion stage, the entire quantity of heat convertible into mechanical work, and which operate alternately in order to achieve a cycle in two strokes: a prolonged expansion with internally sweeping of the combustion chamber, with cold air intake from the intake manifold, through the camber, while compensating the additional expansion, in parallel, by opening a secondary slot for intake into the cylinder, up to temperatures and pressures close to those of the ambient, followed by the partial discharge of burnt gases diluted with the sweeping air inside the cylinder and by the compression of the fraction remaining in the separate combustion chamber. The engine, as claimed by the invention, has a structure consisting of some modules of specific functions, namely a main module () which achieves two cylindrical work spaces of variable volume according to a sine law, a lower module () which takes over the engine torque from one, two or four main modules () and synchronizes the drive pinions in the main modules, a cylinder head module () which thermally insulates the work spaces and the combustion chambers from one another and from the exterior and provides the exchange of gases while suitably positioning the fuel injectors as against the combustion chambers, forming and burning the fuel mixture in the respective combustion chambers, a balance module () being possibly used in the assembly with one or two main modules (), as the case may be. |
