The device has a temperature sensor (TH1) between a burner (Br) and a gas processing unit e.g. nitrogen oxides trap (PANOx) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit, in an exhaust line, and another temperature sensor (TH2) placed downstream from the processing unit. The sensors are associated with a controller to control the burner so as to allow temperature of penetrating exhaust gases in the processing unit to lie between two reference temperatures. The controller determines the reference temperature according to ageing of the processing unit.
