The present invention relates to an air conditioner and a controlling method thereof. An air conditioner according to an embodiment of the present invention includes an indoor unit with an indoor heat exchanger; a first outdoor unit connected to the indoor unit and including a first compressor compressing a coolant and a first outdoor heat exchanger; and a second outdoor unit including an engine generating power using combustion gas, a power generator supplying a power source to the first compressor by using the power generated by the engine, and a second compressor compressing the coolant by using the power of the engine. The present invention is characterized by determining whether the second compressor is additionally operated or not based on a requested cooling or heating load during a process that the first compressor is operated.
