Disclosed in the present application are a method and device for message forwarding. The method includes: an access device receives a first message which is an Ethernet message; the access device looks up a matched equal-cost path from equal-cost multi-path forwarding items, according to the destination MAC address of the Ethernet message, and the multi-path forwarding items include: the virtual MAC address corresponding to a gateway aggregation group, the identification of each gateway device in the gateway aggregation group and the out interface corresponding to the identification of each gateway device respectively; the identification is used for uniquely identifying the gateway device in a large layer 2 network; if N matched equal-cost paths are found, the first message is encapsulated as a second message according to the first path in the N matched equal-cost paths, and the second message which is a large layer 2 protocol message is forwarded according to the out interface of the first path; N is an integer larger than 1.
