Disclosed are a negative active material, a negative electrode and a lithium battery employing the same, and a manufacturing method of the negative active material. The negative active material comprises: a base material of a crystalline silicon-based active material; and a metallic oxide nanoparticle where a diffraction angle 2&thgr; has a peak in the location at 27-28° in measuring the diffraction of an X-ray using CuKα ray, and which is arranged on the surface of the base material of the silicon-based active material. The present invention can reduce initial irreversibility of the lithium battery and improve lifespan characteristics by employing the negative active material.
