PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer having viscosity properties of highly developing viscosity and reducing viscosity with increased shear rates, and particularly to provide a copolymer having viscosity properties of developing viscosity and reducing viscosity with increased shear rates in an aqueous coating composition containing a surfactant.SOLUTION: There is provided a copolymer obtained by copolymerization of (m-1) a macromonomer which has a basic skeleton composed of a polymer chain having a number average molecular weight of 1000 to 10000 and a polymerizable unsaturated group and which is obtained by polymerization of a monomer component (I) containing 5 to 100 mass% of a polymerizable unsaturated monomer (a) having an alkyl group having 4 to 24 carbon atoms and (m-2) a monomer component (m) containing a polymerizable unsaturated monomer having a hydrophilic group.
