Ethylene is polymerized at elevated temperature under pressure using as catalyst a mixture of a titanium halide and metallic aluminium in the absence of a halogen containing compound. The reaction may take place in an inert solvent. The aluminium may be in the form of powder, turnings, wire, bands, rings or as an amalgam. Titanium tetrachloride is the specified halide. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a polar compound which is not an organic halide, e.g. water, salt solutions, hydrofluoric hydrochloric or acetic acids, alcohols, ketones (acetone) and esters.
