PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PSA mode liquid crystal display element that can indicate a proper pretilt angle with a small amount of light irradiation and maintain a high voltage retention rate after the light irradiation, and has a high response speed.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal alignment agent used to form a liquid crystal alignment film in a liquid crystal display element in a PSA mode, is made to contain a compound (A) having a structure (a) that can develop at least one of a radical generating function of generating radicals through light irradiation and a photosensitization function of showing a sensitizing effect through light irradiation.
