PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium secondary battery, having a high capacity per volume and a high operating voltage, and excellent in safety, cycle characteristics, and load characteristics.SOLUTION: The positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery is a lithium cobalt composite oxide having a molar ratio (Li/Co) converted to Li atom with respect to Co is 1.03 to 1.20. Particle surfaces of the lithium cobalt composite oxide are coated with a coating composite. The entire or part of the coating composite is a sulphur compound or a phosphorus compound.
