PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for using a positive electrode active material which enables the practical use of the positive electrode active material consisting of an olivine fluoride defined by the chemical formula, LiMPOF(where "x" is 2 to 0) including Ni as an essential metal M by clearly showing a condition to use the positive electrode active material.SOLUTION: A method for driving a lithium ion battery comprises: a step of charging the lithium ion battery by use of a positive electrode active material defined by the chemical formula, LiMPOF(where "x" is 2 to 0) and including Ni as an essential metal M, in which the charging potential is made 5.3 V (vs. Li/Li+) or higher.
