A hydrogen generation device is provided with a desulfurizer (10) for removing a sulphur compound inside a raw material, and a reformer (100) for generating a hydrogen-containing gas via a reforming reaction using the raw material wherefrom the sulphur compound has been removed by the desulfurizer (10). Also provided is a controller (300) for sending out at least any one among a signal informing that a desulfurizer exchange is needed, and a signal for stopping the operation when a parameter correlating with the cumulative supplied amount of a component contributing to electricity generation among the raw material supplied to the desulfurizer (10) becomes equal to or greater than a predetermined threshold value set according to the calorific value per unit amount of the raw material.
