A new semiconductor memory is provided with an array of volatile and non-volatile cells, wherein individual volatile memory cells have transistors connected in a first memory cell circuit, and wherein at least one non-volatile memory cell has transistors connected in a second memory cell circuit, wherein the first memory cell circuit is formed by addition of at least one transistor to the second memory cell circuit.
