A toggle-type hinge assembly comprises an arm assembly 11 and cup flange 13 and includes a linear damping device 15. A movement converting mechanism is used for converting pivotal movement of the hinge into actuation of the damping device. The mechanism is arranged to produce actuation of the damping device through rotational movement about its linear axis via transmission of two equal and opposite forces acting symmetrically about said axis. The mechanism may comprise a pair of camming surfaces extending helically with respect to the linear axis. The actuator may be mounted via bearing surfaces on the cup flange and may be engaged by the arm assembly. The hinge may include a second mechanism for converting pivotal movement of the hinge into actuation of the damping device. The second mechanism may operate at a different stage to the first mechanism during movement of the hinge. |
