<p>A two stroke internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder in which a piston 1.10 and piston rod 1.18 reciprocate, the cylinder above the piston forming a combustion chamber and comprising a spring-damped exhaust valve 1.5 actuated by a cam 1.2, and a spring-damped intake valve 1.35. The cylinder below the piston is separate to the crank-case and forms a pumping chamber comprising a spring damped intake valve 1.12 and a spring damped transfer valve 1.20 which connects to the combustion chamber intake via a variable volume intake chamber 1.22. The change in volume within the additional chamber 1.22 is hydraulically actuated by movement of the piston rod 1.88 within a hollow member 1.15. The engine combines the high power-to-weight ratio of two-stroke engines, while simultaneously overcoming the weaknesses of current 2-stroke engines when compared to 4-stroke engines, such as low fuel efficiency and compression ratios, and the lack of a closed lubrication system. A system is also disclosed to vary the compression ratio of the engine.</p> |
