In a piston 12, Fig. 3, comprising a body having a head 38 and a cylindrical wall 36 extending therefrom, the head is reinforced by a disc-like insert 40 which is made of a material harder than that of the body, has a diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the wall and is retained in contact with the inner face of the head by projections 42 integral with the wall. The piston 12, is for use in a brake cylinder and has a depression 50 in the insert 40 to receive one end of a thrust link. The piston body is of aluminium and the insert 40 of steel. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the wall 36a is formed with ribs 37a and gudgeon-pin bosses 39a and the steel insert 40a is retained by the projections 42a integral with the wall 36a and also by a protrusion 49a on the piston head engaging an opening in the insert and having portions 51a overlying the opening. |
