A holographic projector apparatus comprises at least one electromagnetic radiation source (e.g. laser 204) coupled to a control system and a three dimensional (3D) image projector (202) for outputting a plurality of image-forming rays (200) representative of a subject. The control system is configured to cause the radiation (e.g. laser light) to be selectively applied to a plurality of unconstrained volumes in a gas (e.g. air) so as to heat and/or ionise the gas within the selected volumes to simulate/generate transient atmospheric optical elements (208). Ionization of the gas in the selected portions may be used to simulate an atmospheric mirror/reflective element. Heating of the gas serves to change the refractive index of the gas in the selected portions, which may be selectively controlled to simulate a converging or diverging lens (see e.g. figures 4A-5B). Alternatively, a diffractive atmospheric element may be simulated. The simulated optical elements 208 modify the path of the image-forming rays (200) to direct them within a viewing region (210) to facilitate viewing of a generated image by a viewer (212). |
