Class 2(6) Polychlorobutadiene latices are produced by polymerizing or copolymerizing non-stabilized 2-chlorobutadiene-which has been purified by treatment with acid-actuated bleaching earthin aqueous emulsion in the presence of from 0À001 to 0À1% of a long chain alkyl mercaptan; 1 to 10% of a surface-active paraffin sulphonate and a free-radical forming catalyst at 10‹ to 60 ‹C. Comonomers specified are dichlorobutadiene, butadiene, styrene and vinylidene chloride, while n-dodecyl mercaptan is also specified. Specified catalyst is potassium persulphate. Stopping agents of formula where R 1 is alkyl or cycloalkyl and R 2 is a C 1 - 12 alkyl may be used. The products may be vulcanized. Specifications 677,584, 677,585 and 719,241 are referred to. |
