868,271. Batteries. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. June 8, 1959 [June 17, 1958], No. 19449/59. Class 53. A rechargeable dry cell having a cathode of manganese dioxide and carbon, and an anode of zinc particles, is provided with an electrolyte consisting of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide containing iodine or a compound containing iodine, for example zinc iodide or sodium or potassium iodide. Zinc oxide may also be present. Amalgamation of the anode may be obtained by introducing into the electrolyte a solution of mercuric iodide in potassium iodide. The electrolyte is stated to prevent hydrogen evolution on overcharging, and the accumulation of oxygen. A cell is described containing the electrolyte and in which the electrodes are separated by two layers of fibrous material enclosing a semi-permeable layer between them. |
