<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a conventional chaff carbonizing apparatus that the apparatus itself tends to be upsized because most of chaff carbonizing apparatuses are a rotary kiln type though the chaff carbonizing apparatus using the chaff as fuel is used as a chaff drying machine installed in a country elevator or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The chaff carbonizing apparatus 71 is provided with a supply feeder 90 and an ignition burner 95 on one side of a cylindrical furnace body 93, and also is provided with an exhaust part 96 for discharging an exhaust gas produced by the combustion of the chaff on another end of the furnace body 93. A plurality of air holes 101 for forming a turning flow of air is arranged in the furnace body 93. The furnace body 93 is configured so that the chaff is combusted and carbonized while moving spirally along the inner circumference of the furnace body 93 by the swirling flow of the air.
