A machine for taping a conductor in open coiled form comprises a taping head for receiving the conductor and includes means for carrying a supply of tape, feeding means which are adapted to move the conductor and the means for carrying the tape supply relative to one another lengthwise of the conductor, and means which as the relative movement takes place are adapted to move the means for carrying the tape supply around the conductor between adjacent coil turns of the conductor, whereby with an end of the tape secured to the conductor, the tape will be wrapped round the conductor. An open coil 1, supported by free rollers 3b and fed by rollers 3, 3a, driven in the same direction and at the same speed by an electric motor 8, passes through a polishing wheel 34 driven by a motor 41 and cleaning baths 35 to a taping head 4. Resilient frusto-conical rollers 25a driven off a shaft 18 rotated by the motor 8 through belt gearing 9 grip a turn 1c of the coil 1 and feed it through an aperture in a carrier wheel 22 rotated by a gear-wheel meshing with a gear on the shaft 18. On the carrier wheel 22 is obliquely mounted a drum of tape 22b from which tape passes on to the coil 1 as the drum 22b passes between adjacent turns 1c of the coil 1. Pivoted at 28 to the carrier 22 is a bellcrank lever 27 one end of which carries a weight 29 which under the action of centrifugal force moves outwardly of the wheel 22 and thus urges the other end 27c of the lever 27 against the tape on the drum 22. When the diameter of tape on the drum reaches a predetermined value the weight 29 is able to move outwardly sufficiently far to close a micro-switch 31 connected to the circuit of the motor 8 and thus stop the machine for replacement of the tape.</p> |
