A method and system for the control and signaling of traffic signal lights by emergency vehicles in the vicinity. Emergency vehicles can be detected by traffic signal lights allowing the emergency vehicle to have a prioritized, rapid, unimpeded, and safe emergency vehicle transit.

1. A traffic light control system comprising:
at least one traffic signal apparatus; a signal generator, contained within the traffic signal apparatus, that generates a signal within a frequency band of 57-64 GHz; a transmitter, contained within the traffic signal apparatus, that transmits the signal; a receiver, contained within the traffic signal apparatus, that receives a response to the signal; and a computational device, contained within the traffic signal apparatus, communicatively coupled to the receiver that analyzes the response to the signal to determine if a specified condition is present.
