摘要 <p>Water-soluble polymers containing recurring units of the N-methylglucamide of acrylic acid are obtained by reacting polymethyl acrylate with sufficient N-methylglucamine to convert from 10%-100% of the ester units to amide units and thereby render the polymer water-soluble, the reaction being carried out at a temperature in the range of about 115 DEG -155 DEG C. in the presence of an inert organic solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide or dioxane. When the resulting polymer contains unreacted ester units, these may be hydrolysed by treatment with an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide, or reacted with a low molecular weight amine, e.g. dimethylamine, dibutylamine, N-methyl-N-propylamine, dimethylaminopropylamine or diethylaminobutylamine. The polymers may be used as soil conditioners, whiteness retention agents for textiles and in applications to paper.</p>
